Coming Back Home: Meeting Ourselves Again

Returning to our home country after migrating is not just a physical journey - it’s a deep emotional and energetic experience.

When we come back, we realise we’re not exactly the same as when we left. Our identity has evolved through different stages:

Myself Before Migrating:

Shaped by our culture, family, and the environment we grew up in. Our sense of self was rooted in traditions, labels, beliefs, values - and of course, our language.

My Migrant Self:

Migration challenged us. We had to adapt, grow resilience, let go of old ways of being, and create new ones. It became a powerful opportunity to reinvent ourselves.

My Current Self - A Composite Identity:

Now, we’re a fusion of all our past and present selves. Authors like Stuart Hall and Homi Bhabha describe this as acomposite identity- blending our roots with our experiences abroad. We’ve become a multilayered, evolving self that doesn’t fit into just one box. We’ve expanded.

So, what happens when we return to our home country - even if it’s just for a visit?

We enter what Bhabha callsthe third space- a place that’s not fully “here” or “there.” It’s a space where new forms of self emerge - where the ‘you’ shaped by migration meets your roots, and blends with everything you’ve learned, unlearned, and transformed.

From an energetic perspective, this return can activate deep layers within us - especially the root chakra (Muladhara), connected to our sense of safety, belonging, and origin. Emotions like fear, confusion, or a deep sense of disconnection may arise.

Coming home is like looking into an old mirror with new eyes. The landscape may look familiar, but you’re seeing it differently now.
